Join us for an unforgettable adventure and tick off Breast Peak, an incredible New Zealand hike, exclusive access available only through Lake Hāwea Station on this one day - March 29th 2025. Enjoy breathtaking views over Lake Hāwea, Mount Aspiring/Tititea and the surrounding peaks - all in support of a breast cancer cure.
Lake Hāwea Station is a B-Corp and Carbon Zero farm renowned for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Hike for a Cure will be open to the community to experience exclusive access to this remarkable property, along with the challenge and rewards of an extraordinary hiking experience.

Timings: Base station opens from 7am. Hike briefing from 7:30am. Hike begins at 8:00am.

Hike Options: Three different hike options varying from between 2 - 7 hours
Base to Air Strip: 2 hours return
Base to Saddle: 4 hours return
Base to Breast Peak: 6 - 7 hours return
Age: 18+
Total Hike Distance: 20.5km (return) with an elevation gain of approx 1,000m
Fitness level: A moderate to good level of fitness is required to reach the summit
Embark on a memorable adventure up Breast Peak, featuring a rewarding approx 1,000m vertical ascent. This private track in Lake Hāwea Station is a well-marked trail that offers a blend of moderate challenges and breathtaking viewpoints, perfect for those seeking a true mountain experience.

The journey begins with an easy 2.7km section through rolling farmland, climbing to 300m - accessible for most fitness levels. With stunning views of Lake Hāwea as your backdrop, the gradient rises steeply over the next 2.6km. As you ascend, the panoramic vistas of Lake Hāwea and surrounding peaks unfold, rewarding you for your efforts so far.
The next 4.5km section levels out with gentle to moderate slopes offering a chance to catch your breath while soaking in the beauty of the Southern Alps. The final 200 metres to the summit presents the ultimate challenge: a steep climb where the gradient increases sharply from 16% to 30%, demanding good fitness to reach the top of Breast Peak.
Take your time to enjoy the sweeping 360-degree views of Lake Hāwea, Mount Aspiring/Tititea, and the surrounding peaks before beginning your descent back to the base.
The base will be set up with offerings of food and beverages available for purchase both before and after the Hike. Unwind with Chef Fede from Southern Fuegos, the ultimate Argentinian outdoor open-fire grill company and grab a refreshing coffee or beverage from Sweet Coffee, then relax and celebrate your achievement - all in support of a great cause!
Participants will hike the Breast Peak track, which is accessible exclusively through Lake Hāwea Station. Please note, this track is distinct from Breast Hill, a seperate walking route with its own unique experiences and scenery, accessible to the public and managed by DOC.
Helpful Information:
Leave No Trace: Please respect that this is private property and a working farm by adhering to the "leave no trace" principle. Everything you take on the hike must be brought back with you. Appropriate disposal units will be available at the base station.
Weather: This walk will go ahead rain or shine. In the case of extreme weather, Lake Hāwea Station will make a call as to the height that hikers can go for health and safety reasons.
Required Equipment: Standard hiking adventure supplies are required for this walk. Participants who are aiming to reach the summit must also bring their own personal locator beacon.
Fitness: Assess your fitness - while you don’t need to be an athlete to complete this trek, it is a 5-7 hour hike. A reasonably active person with no medical conditions or injuries should be able to manage the hike.
