Our researchers are at the heart of what we do.
Research remains pivotal in advancing our understanding of breast cancer.
With no direct Government funding, New Zealand researchers rely on the generosity of everyday Kiwi’s and Breast Cancer Cure to continue their life-changing work and it is essential we enable them to innovate and lead improvements, to stop people dying from this disease.
We believe that research developed within New Zealand, with our population in mind, will lead to more precise prevention, earlier and more accurate diagnosis, tailored therapies, and better and more equitable outcomes.
We believe that research will find a cure.
Professor Andrew Shelling
Professor Andrew Shelling is our Principal Researcher and has held a key advisory seat on the Breast Cancer Cure Board since 2020.
Professor Shelling is head of the Medical Genetics Group. His research is primarily interested in understanding the molecular changes that occur during the development of genetic disorders, focusing on breast and ovarian cancer, and reproductive disorders. An understanding of the important changes will eventually provide an opportunity to improve the early detection of disease, and to target more effective treatment.
Andrew currently holds the position of Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and serves as the Director of the Centre for Cancer Research at the University of Auckland.
Andrew has served as
Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (2013-2023)

Deputy-Chairperson of the Advisory Committee for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (2006-2012)
Director of the Bachelor of Medical Sciences Honours programme (2008-2016)
