Problem:
Some powerful cancer medicines called ADCs (antibody–drug conjugates) work really well, but one important type of ingredient they could use - homocamptothecins - is barely used because they’re very hard to make. These ingredients could make cancer treatments stronger and safer, but scientists haven’t had a good way to create them.
Project:
A research team is developing a new, easier method to make these special ingredients in the lab. They’re using modern chemistry techniques to build better versions of two important cancer-drug components (SN-38 and DXd) so they can be added to next-generation cancer treatments.
Outcome:
The team will create the first practical recipe for making homocamptothecin ingredients for ADC cancer drugs. This means scientists will finally be able to test new versions, study how they work, and use them in future cancer-fighting medicines.
Future:
This breakthrough could help researchers in New Zealand and around the world design better, more effective cancer treatments. It also opens doors for new medical discoveries and potential long-term benefits for patients.
