Hikers will gather at the Base Station on arrival to sign in and must sign out again before departing Lake Hāwea Station. The Base Station will be buzzing with incredible stalls - including delicious offerings from Archery & Co, Emerson's Tiny Pub, locally sourced beverages and other goodies for purchase before and after your hike - alongside live entertainment from the legendary Josh Leys, bringing great vibes before and after your hike. Remember to collect your Hike for a Cure Cap when you sign out!

This private, well-marked trail begins with a gentle 2.7km climb through farmland before steepening to reveal panoramic views of Lake Hāwea and surrounding peaks. The route offers steady ascents, recharge stations along the way, and a challenging final push to Breast Peak’s summit, rewarding you with sweeping 360° views.

Those attempting the Double Summit will summit Breast Peak first before returning to the saddle to begin the climb to Breast Hill, along the dramatic ridgeline past Pakituhi Hut (part of the Te Araroa Trail) before reaching a second summit at 1,578m. At any point, hikers can choose to turn back toward the base.

Please respect that this is private property and a working farm by adhering to the "leave no trace" principle. Everything you take on the hike must be brought back with you. Appropriate disposal units will be available at the base station.

Please note we have a photographer at the event taking photos and videos. We use these photos and videos on our website and social media to promote and celebrate our events. If you specifically do not wish for your image to be used, please let us know on the day.

This walk will go ahead rain or shine. In the case of extreme weather, Lake Hāwea Station will make a call as to the height that hikers can go for health and safety reasons.

Standard hiking adventure supplies are required for this walk. All individuals and groups hiking to the summit are required to carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). If walking as a group only one PBL per group is required.

Assess your fitness - while you don’t need to be an athlete to complete this trek, it is a 5-9 hour hike. A reasonably active person with no medical conditions or injuries should be able to manage the hike.

Please note, mobile phone service is patchy for the duration of the hike.

Please note the EPIC Lake Hāwea cycling event is also taking place on Saturday 20 March, starting from 8:00am.

Access roads to Lake Hāwea Station will remain open. However, there will be cyclists on the surrounding roads, so please take extra care when driving to and from the property, allow additional travel time, and keep an eye out for riders at all times. Thank you for helping keep everyone safe.

Health and Safety Agreement & Participation Rules 

By signing up to this event, you confirm that the information you have provided is accurate and up to date. You understand the potential risks involved in this charity hike and agree to follow the rules set out below. 

1. I have read and understood all event information and acknowledge that I participate at my own risk. 
2. I understand that Hike for a Cure is NOT a race; it is a charitable hike focused on enjoying the outdoors and supporting breast cancer research. 
3. I accept that this event carries an inherent risk of injury, illness, and, in rare cases, death. 
4. I confirm that I am physically fit and have prepared appropriately for this hike. 
5. I understand the course may involve hazards including, but not limited to uneven terrain, rocks, roots, streams, motor vehicle traffic, slippery surfaces, changing weather, heat exhaustion, dehydration, hypothermia, other participants, and the presence of event staff and volunteers. 
6. I will be free from drugs and alcohol for the duration of the event. 
7. I acknowledge that while medical personnel will be available, assistance may not reach me immediately and extractions could take time. 
8. I consent to medical staff providing treatment as they see fit, within their training scope. 
9. I will remain on marked trails at all times, unless directed otherwise by event staff. 
10. I will carry and/or wear all compulsory safety equipment. 
11. I accept that event staff may remove me from the hike at any time for safety reasons. 
12. I will complete the hike entirely under my own power. 
13. I will not light fires. 
14. I will not litter. 
15. I will not approach or touch livestock. 
16. Smoking and vaping are not permitted. 
17. If I withdraw from the event, I will sign out with a staff member before leaving. 
18. If I require help, I will seek assistance from a staff member or volunteer. If no assistance is available, and it is a true emergency, I will call 111 (NZ emergency services). 
19. If I leave the event without informing staff, I understand I will be considered “missing,” and my emergency contact will be called. If neither I nor my contact can be reached, a search will be activated, and I may be liable for any related costs. 
20. I understand a photographer may capture images and videos during the event for promotional use. If I do not wish my image to be used, I will advise staff on the day. 
21. As this is a charity fundraiser, I understand that no refunds are available. However, I may transfer my ticket to another person up to three days prior to the event by contacting the organisers with the new participant’s details. 
22. I acknowledge that this waiver, agreement, release, and indemnity discharges all persons, corporations, associations, and bodies involved in organising or staging the event - including their staff, agents, representatives, officers, and volunteers - from any liability for loss, injury, or damage to myself or my property.
